Is OnePlus shutting down in some markets? What it means for buyers in India

There have been many contradictory reports about OnePlus’ operations in recent months. In January, Android Headlines reported that OnePlus was planning to shut down operations globally. The rumour was swiftly denied by OnePlus, which stated that the article was “unverified”. This week, some new developments have happened that once again suggest OnePlus may be pulling out of some countries.

Yesterday, OnePlus India CEO Robin Liu stepped down from his role to “pursue his personal passions,” the company confirmed to FoneArena. OnePlus added that its India operations “continue with local strategy and business continuity ensured.”

OnePlus says India operations continue as Nord 6 launch approaches

OnePlus India, in its statement to FoneArena, added that its India operations “continue with local strategy and business continuity ensured.” This should answer concerns that OnePlus India is very much planning to stay in India for the foreseeable future.

What adds further credibility to the matter is that OnePlus is gearing up to launch the OnePlus Nord 6 in India on April 7. The phone is confirmed to pack a massive 9,000mAh battery, 165 fps gaming experience, and Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 chipset, among other things.

While OnePlus India has ensured it isn’t going anywhere, we might still see some shakeup in organisational structure and strategy for the country. With Liu’s departure, OnePlus India has yet to name a successor. As far as the product portfolio goes, a recent tweet by tipster Debayan Roy suggests OnePlus will focus on its mid-range and sub-flagship lineups, such as the OnePlus 15s, while the future of the number series remains unclear.

OnePlus might be shutting down in some parts of Europe

While things are somewhat clear about OnePlus’ India operations, there’s considerable uncertainty about other global markets.

A now-deleted tweet from well-known tipster Yogesh Brar stated that OnePlus will shut down operations in global markets as early as April 2026, shifting its focus to the entry- and mid-range segments in India. These regions could include large portions of Europe and the US, 9to5Google reports, citing a source familiar with the matter.

This move may be intended to help OPPO expand its global footprint. OnePlus founder and current OPPO Chief Product Officer Pete Lau confirmed on X that the OPPO Find X9 Ultra will launch globally, marking a first for the “Ultra” series. So it looks like OPPO is doubling down on expanding its reach.

Should you worry about OnePlus in India?

For now, there’s little reason for Indian buyers to hit the panic button. OnePlus has publicly reiterated its commitment to the market, and with launches like the Nord 6 around the corner, the brand’s short-term roadmap in India looks intact. If anything, the current signals point towards a strategic recalibration rather than an exit.

Globally, however, the picture appears less clear. Reports of a potential pullback in parts of Europe suggest that OnePlus could be narrowing its focus to markets where it sees stronger growth and profitability. This wouldn’t be entirely surprising at a time when rising component costs and tighter competition are forcing brands to streamline operations.

For buyers, the key takeaway is this: OnePlus isn’t disappearing, but it may be evolving. In India, the brand is likely to double down on its core strengths — value-driven performance phones and a cleaner software experience. The real question is whether this sharper focus will help OnePlus stand out again in an increasingly crowded market, or further blur its identity amid aggressive rivals.
