Realme 16 5G teased to launch soon as India’s first selfie mirror phone

Highlights
  • Realme 16 5G features a small selfie mirror at the back.
  • It has a vertical camera bar similar to the Pixel series and the iPhone Air.
  • Realme 16 5G has already been launched in Vietnam.

The Realme 16 Pro and 16 Pro+ launched in India earlier this year, in January. Now, the brand is adding another phone to the lineup, which is the Realme 16 5G. This one will be the standard model in the series, and it’s going to be quite different from the Pro models. The Realme 16 5G is teased to launch as India’s first selfie mirror phone. It has a small circular mirror at the back, which acts as a viewfinder while taking selfies from the rear camera.

Realme 16 selfie mirror design

The Realme 16 5G’s overall design is also quite different from the Pro models. Instead of the square-shaped camera island, the Realme 16 5G features a horizontal camera strip running along the back of the phone. It’s similar to designs we’ve seen on the Pixel phones and the iPhone Air. The selfie mirror also sits on this camera bar, just next to the sensors.

Realme is targeting young users with this selfie mirror camera for “sharper, more detailed, and instantly social‑ready images”. It may appeal to a crowd who like taking selfies, especially with their friends.

So far, only the phone’s design has been officially revealed. Realme is calling it an “elegant air design that feels effortlessly light, perfectly gleaming”. The smartphone is also said to fit comfortably in one’s hand, suggesting a compact form factor.

Realme 16 specifications: what to expect

Since the Realme 16 5G has been launched in Vietnam, and this one looks like the same phone, we could get the same hardware too. The smartphone features a 6.57-inch FHD+ AMOLED display (2372 × 1080 pixels) with a 120Hz refresh rate, 4,200 nits peak brightness, and DT Star D+ glass protection. This display size would give a slightly compact feel compared to the large-screened phones in the market.

The rear camera setup is a 50MP Sony IMX852 main camera and a 2MP monochrome sensor with LumaColor processing and AI Edit Genie. For selfies, there’s a 50MP front camera on the Realme 16 5G, which is expected to be one of its highlights. Under the hood of the phone runs the MediaTek Dimensity 6400 Turbo chipset, which may not seem like an upgrade over its predecessor, the Realme 15, which uses the Dimensity 7300 Plus. We’ll still have to test the phone to see if it makes any difference in the phone’s performance.

Another highlight is the 7,000mAh battery on the Realme 16 5G. This is one of the largest batteries you’ll get on a smartphone, and one that should last for two good days. It’s paired with 60W fast charging and wired reverse charging support. The smartphone could also launch with a 6050mm² vapour chamber, and IP66, IP68, IP69, and IP69K ratings for dust and water resistance.

The Realme 16 5G could stand out for its compact feel, bright display, large battery, and good durability. It could appeal to those who want a phone that isn’t too large or small, has a stylish design, a large battery, and a balanced set of hardware. The Realme 16 5G might be right for you. It might also appeal to those who like taking a lot of selfies and are interested in this selfie mirror concept. If you prioritise cameras and battery life, this could be one to watch, but hold off on pre-ordering until more details emerge.
