Samsung Galaxy A17 5G debuts with six years of OS upgrades and AI features under Rs 20,000

Highlights

Samsung has officially launched the Galaxy A17 5G in India, positioning it as the brand’s most affordable AI-driven smartphone under the Galaxy A series. The Galaxy A17 is the successor to the Galaxy A16 5G, which was the brand’s best-selling smartphone in India last year, according to a Counterpoint report. The Galaxy A17 5G is both lighter and slimmer than its predecessor, measuring 7.5mm in thickness and weighing 192g. The Galaxy A17 also takes several cues from Samsung’s flagship phones by promising six OS and security upgrades, something unheard of in the sub-Rs 20,000 space.

As part of the forthcoming festive season, the Samsung Galaxy A17 5G is an addition to Samsung’s ever-expanding smartphone portfolio, offering users a mid-range option to consider if they’re looking for a Samsung phone. It comes with a starting price tag of Rs 18,999 for the 6GB+128GB storage option, Rs 20,499 for the 8GB+128GB variant, and Rs 23,499 for the 8GB+256GB variant.

As part of the launch offers, Samsung is offering a flat Rs 1,000 cashback on HDFC and SBI Bank cards. Additionally, there’s a Rs 1,000 cashback offer for UPI users. Buyers can also purchase the Galaxy A17 on EMI of up to 10 months with zero interest or processing fee.

Moving on to the Samsung Galaxy A17’s offerings, the handset features a 6.7-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate. It continues to feature a U-shaped notch instead of a punch hole to house the camera, which, at this point, looks dated compared to the punch-hole cutout found on other similarly priced phones. The display is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus, which is impressive and will make it more resistant to scratches and drops. For added durability, it features an IP54 rating for protection against dust and water.

Running under the hood is the Exynos 1330 processor, the same chipset found in the Galaxy A14 5G. This chipset scored 772 and 2,123 on Geekbench single-core and multi-core tests, respectively, in our in-house tests. The Galaxy A17 5G is powered by a 5,000mAh battery, paired with 25W fast charging. Samsung is bundling a charging adapter with the phone this time around.
