OPPO F31 Pro Plus Expert Review Summary
Expert Rating:
8.0/10
Verdict
The OPPO F31 Pro+ makes sense for those who want a durable, good-looking device with dependable battery life and can live with average cameras and an ageing chipset. But if you are chasing performance or versatile photography, there are options worth exploring.
Pros
- Stylish design, excellent durability
- Long-lasting battery
- Efficient thermals
- Decent stereo speakers
Cons
- Performance could have been better
- Cameras lack versatility
- Lots of pre-installed apps
Striking & durable design
+
The OPPO F31 Pro+ is a striking device to look at, particularly in the Gemstone Blue colour variant we received for review. Its dual-tone finish stands out, with the lower portion reflecting a subtle bluish-purple hue when light hits it at an angle. This shimmering effect also extends to the circular camera module, creating a glowing ring around its edges. I also appreciate that the module sits almost flush with the back panel and features a gentle ramp, ensuring it doesn't feel intrusive or awkward against the finger.

Impressive battery life
+
Talking about the endurance, the OPPO F31 Pro+ provides an impressive backup for regular usage. It is one of the beefiest batteries you can find within the segment, ranking just behind the POCO F7, which boasts the segment's largest 7,550mAh battery. The handset scores 13 hours and 29 minutes in our PCMark battery test, which is modest for a 7,000mAh battery. There are Realme smartphones with the same battery that have scored over 15 hours consistently during the test.

Lovely display, limited brightness
+
The OPPO F31 Pro+ sports a 6.8-inch AMOLED display with a centred punch-hole, FHD+ resolution, adaptive 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10 support, and up to 1,600 nits peak brightness. This is a pretty standard display for the price, with razor-thin bezels on all four sides. However, the brightness feels slightly underwhelming, impacting the display's legibility outside under direct sunlight. The Realme 15 Pro, which boasts a 6,500 nits peak brightness, was relatively brighter when compared side by side.

Capable, but ageing chipset
+
At the core of the OPPO F31 Pro+ is Qualcomm's Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 SoC, paired with up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. While this setup is capable of handling everyday tasks and moderate gaming, it's a bit surprising to see OPPO opt for a slightly older chipset when newer and more powerful options are already available. Its direct successor, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4, has even made its way into similarly priced rivals such as the Realme 15 Pro earlier this year.

Staying connected
+
The OPPO F31 Pro+ is touted as the segment's first smartphone to support 5G++ connectivity, promising enhanced network capabilities with ultra-fast speeds and access to more signal frequency bands. The 5G++ icon is designed to appear automatically when paired with a compatible operator, in this case Jio. However, in my testing, the device only latched onto 5G+ networks, and the speeds were unexpectedly lower than what I achieved on the iPhone 16e using the same SIM, in the same location, and on the same plan.

Functional software, but far from clean
+
Software-wise, the F31 Pro+ runs ColorOS 15 on top of Android 15 out of the box. OPPO has committed to providing two years of major OS upgrades and three years of security updates for the device. As is typical with OPPO smartphones, a wide range of apps comes pre-installed. In fact, the F31 Pro+ ships with as many as 76 pre-loaded apps, the highest I've encountered on a handset recently. Of these, 23 are third-party apps, which can be uninstalled after setup, though doing so adds an extra step for the user.

Decent cameras
+
The OPPO F31 Pro+ sports a dual camera setup, with a 50MP OIS sensor and a 2MP monochrome lens. The front camera is a 32MP lens, mounted in the punch-hole setup, for selfies and video calling. The cameras support a variety of modes, including underwater photography, Time-Lapse, Slow-mo video recording, and more. Moreover, the device is capable of shooting 4K video recording at 30 fps.
