Luminous Edge Go 1500 overview: a power-full speaker

Imagine yourself with your besties camping atop a hill, watching the sun go down as you enjoy your favourite music and the pleasant warmth from the bonfire crackling in front of you, even as you feel the nip in the evening air. I’m not sure if that description was detailed enough to conjure up an image in your mind, but I fed a version of that into an AI tool, and it gave me the picture you see below. Not too bad, I’d say.

This also works as a nice backdrop for the device I’m trying out, the Luminous Edge Go 1500, which would be ideal for a setting like the one I described. This device is a portable power station and a party speaker in one, though its Swiss Army knife-like capabilities include quite a few other handy features. Here’s an overview.

Features: a veritable Swiss Army knife

Here’s a look at everything on offer here
  • 1500VA battery capacity
  • 90W audio system with Bluetooth
  • 6″ woofer and dual 2″ speakers
  • 2 wireless mics included
  • Guitar input
  • IP34 splash-resistant and fireproof
  • 5-year warranty
  • Anti-slip carry handles
  • 3000+ charge cycles
  • 90-minute fast charging
  • Emergency / SOS light

Design: heavy and boxy

Design-wise, it’s a large black box with a mesh grille in front and a bunch of bright orange-hued buttons and black knobs on top, and carry handles on both sides that stand out prominently due to their silver colour. Worth mentioning that while the device is quite heavy (tipping the scales at 15kg), the carry handles come in handy and are positioned such that two people can carry the device from either side. That’s something that might be useful while lugging it up a mountaintop for camping, for instance.

There’s Luminous branding on the front and top. On the right, you’ll see a couple of electrical power sockets, while the rear sports a light panel that emits bright white light when switched on. On the left, there are a plethora of ports, including two Type-C and two Type-A, along with a 12V DC output port and an AC input port for charging the Edge Go 1500.

A power cable is bundled. Luminous also includes a couple of wireless mics, along with two pairs of AA batteries to power them — so you’re good to go right out of the box. There’s no remote included, though, and that’s something I did miss during my usage.

Usage and performance: delivers on most counts

Don’t let the looks fool you. This thing is a beast, in every sense of the word. As a power station, it can power electrical appliances like pedestal fans, lamps, etc via its AC power sockets on the right, whereas the USB Type-C and Type-A ports can be used to charge smartphones, laptops, etc, with up to 100W output (via Type-C). It’s truly a power station, and the small LCD screen on top displays useful info like the modes in use, the battery level, usage time remaining based on current output, or time to full charge if you’re charging it. It charges really quickly too, which is surprising for its massive battery capacity. I’d say the 90-minute charging time would be fairly accurate.

You can use it to power not just devices, but parties too. Use it to liven up your house party without worrying about the availability of a power socket, and let guests charge their phones too. The 90W speaker gets quite loud and offers deep, rich bass. Sound does tend to get a bit muddled at high volumes, but I wouldn’t call this a deal breaker. Thanks to the two wireless mics, you can use the device for karaoke sessions too, and there’s even a guitar input on the top panel. The front panel behind the grille is decked up with RGB lights, and one of the buttons on the top panel cycles through various colours and patterns that you can choose to add pizzazz to your party.

To sum it up

Listed at Rs 1,07,838 on Amazon at the time of writing, the Luminous Edge Go 1500 might not be for everyone. While camping is a clear use case, the device can also be quite useful for rooftop parties and other events, where one might require a speaker that doubles as a power station, or a power station that serves as a speaker — depending on your requirements. The wireless mics can be used for karaoke or making voice announcements, while the guitar input is also a useful feature for parties and events. So if you can stomach the price and the use cases appeal to you, the Luminous Edge Go 1500 is a useful device to have.
