Samsung has long been at the forefront of foldable smartphone innovation. In 2019, the company became the first to commercialise a foldable smartphone with the launch of the original Galaxy Fold, a device that unfolded from a compact phone into a tablet-like screen. Fast forward to 2025: the brand released the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 a few months back, and could officially announce the release of a tri-fold smartphone called the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold by the end of this year.
Ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in South Korea, as part of a side event, the Galaxy Z TriFold was spotted sitting inside a glass chamber by Chosum Media, a South Korean news publication, in both folded and unfolded forms. Just like the Huawei Mate XT that debuted in China last year, the Galaxy TriFold appears to have two hinges that will allow the device’s inner screen to fully expand from a 6.5-inch to a 10-inch display. However, it’s unknown whether it’ll be possible to unfold just one side of the hinge to reveal a mini tablet-like display.

The existence of a trifold smartphone from Samsung dates back to the January 2025 Galaxy Unpacked event, where Samsung displayed a myriad of upcoming devices on a large screen alongside the Galaxy S25 series. This included a tablet-like device with displays divided into three equal parts, and that device is exactly what could come to fruition in the next couple of months.
While Samsung has long been catering to users who wish to have a productivity and multitasking powerhouse with the Galaxy Z Fold lineup, we believe that with the Galaxy TriFold, the smartphone giant wants to push the envelope even further and offer a device that can replicate a desktop experience when fully expanded, while having the versatility to use the product as a normal slab smartphone for easy portability and completing tasks on the go. This tri-fold smartphone could also serve as a way to consume content in rich, vibrant detail, as the display is likely to utilise a flexible AMOLED technology.

In a report from SamMobile, Samsung has said they “plan to bring this next-generation device to users within this year”. The report also notes that the Galaxy TriFold is part of Samsung’s ongoing efforts to advance innovative technologies that deliver a meaningful user experience in the era of mobile AI. That said, it appears Samsung has addressed the durability challenges that come with a flexible display as large as the Galaxy TriFold’s, which is even larger than the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s 8-inch display when unfolded. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 has an IP48 rating and an Advanced Armour aluminium frame, meaning it offers a strong level of protection against water, allowing it to be submerged in clean water for several minutes.
While we won’t recommend doing that, the Galaxy TriFold could boast the same or even better durability factors than the Galaxy Z Fold 7, considering its wide expanded form factor. We are yet to get details of other key hardware aspects, such as the chipset, battery capacity, and cameras. But since it’s likely to be positioned even higher than the Galaxy Z Fold 7, one can expect top-of-the-line specifications, such as a flagship-grade Qualcomm processor.Galaxy Z Trifold! pic.twitter.com/9jStEwLQ3w
