S1001 with Win10

Using the S1001 with Win8.1nGood to see Win10 pre installed and optimised rollover product. nMy god, how can I start writing about this masterpiece! This is by far the best 2-1 I have used when it comes to build quality and touch response. Acer still manages to deliver classiness in its products and this one is truly amazing. Been using it for almost a month now and its works like a charm! :) The only drawback which I found would be its low internal storage and lack of light indicators for power and hdd! but once you get used to it, you will surely fall in love with this baby! Thanks Acer. Go for it guys!

Good, value for money purchase

A cute little laptop is how I would describe this best. Looks are obviously subjective so your perception may be difficult but I liked it. I bought it for the size and did not even think about its looks but when I opened up the box, I liked what I saw.nnThe package contains the laptop, power adapter and micro usb cable along with the international traveler's warranty card. As some pointed out already, the power adapter is not of Acer but a generic one by some company HoIoTo (not sure if I got their name right). That is the first thing in cost-cutting that a user would notice. I don't know how much Acer saved by going for an unbranded one but it does not help their brand. The adapter is rated for 100-240V range and spits out 5V/2A. It is built ok but gets very hot when in operation. The laptop having no LEDs for power or battery, this has become useful to me - after I start charging, I touch the adapter and if it's just warm then I know that the battery is fully charged. If it is very hot, there is still current flowing :-)nnI already said there are no LEDs so there is no way for a user to know if the laptop is ON or OFF. Or if the battery is being charged or full. It is something very basic that is missing but my usage is pretty limited so I got over it. The screen is not Full HD but a few pixles more than HD. It is good though and text is crisp enough and images, videos all look ok. The touch sensitivity is good and I have no complaints there.nAvailability of ports is a major thorn in this package - there is Headphone/mic combo jack, micro HDMI, micro USB and a microSD slot. The micro USB is used to charge the laptop too so while charging, you basically have nothing else to connect any peripherals. All these ports are on the left edge - the right edge has nothing. Acer could have given two more micro USB slots here. After all this is a Windows computer and everyone has atleast 2 peripherals to connect, if not more.nnI have been referring this as a laptop but it probably would be more accurate to call it a tablet with a keyboard dock. And these are two separate items too in the package. The keyboard dock attaches to the tablet via magnetic slots and this mechanism is very nicely done. Just as I bring the tablet closer to the dock, the magnets pull it in. The attachment secures with a click reassuring us of a solid lock. The keyboard dock adds one more port - a standard USB on its left edge. Again, Acer could have easily fitted more ports here but chose not to. This is shocking when you consider there is nothing in the dock except the keyboard - no additional battery, no additional disk (another variant of this model puts a 500GB hard disk here). So there is literally no reason for Acer to not provide more ports here. Two more standard USB ones could have easily fitted on the right edge. Also for this variant, Acer isn't giving any hard disk but it could have atleast left it accessible - those who want can put a 2.5" HDD or even a M2 SSD making this a much better machine.nnAnd we haven't talked about the keyboard layout - awful, in one word. I read somewhere that Acer went with a European keyboard layout and in that the Enter key takes up the space for 3 keys. And a couple of the keys are narrow relative to others - the 'M' key, the 'comma' and the 'dot' keys. I always mistype due to this - a 'comma' where I want 'M'. The keyboard layout designer deserves a month's pay cut for this work.nIn summary the keyboard dock is nothing but a big chunk of space wasted. You can type short messages and emails but longer and serious work needs a better one.nnThe storage is 32GB - I immediately upgraded to Windows 10 Anniversary Update that rolled out end of July and put in a 32GB microSD that I had lying around. And switched storage to SD card wherever possible. Today Windows takes up about 16GB and I am hoping I can get by that. All new content barring Windows Updates should go to the SDcard now.nI wasn't sure if the eMMC based storage would be fast but ignored that aspect thinking it would be faster than a mechanical HDD in any case. My start up time is within 10-15 secs and that is good for me. Shutdown time is much less (around 8 secs). nnI bought a $15 USB hub that gives me 2 more ports and the hub can also be connected to the microUSB slot. Ofcourse the speeds wouldn't be great since there's no USB3.0 in this laptop. But for accessories like wireless mouse, 3G/4G dongles, it is sufficient.nnAt ╣11990/- this is very affordable and a very good value-for-money item. I have only talked about the negatives more to let others know what they are buying but to me personally, I am happy and satisfied that I didn't spend a bomb for basic browsing and media consumption.nnAcer has another model - the S1002 which seems to be the next generation of this line. And a couple things seem to have been fixed - it has LEDs for power and battery. And the power cable goes into a dedicated DC jack - so the microUSB is only for accessories
