IMDbThe film Soldier (1998) shared the same screenwriter as the original Blade Runner (1982) - David Webb Peoples, who has stated that both films are set in the same shared universe. In "Soldier," genetically-engineered soldiers meant to replace Todd and his fellow soldiers are implied to be in fact replicants, continuing a theme from "Blade Runner." "2036: Nexus Dawn," set in between the original "Blade Runner" and its sequel Blade Runner 2049 (2017), implies that Nexus-9 replicants were developed in 2035, the year in which "Soldier" takes place.
There are three short films made to fill the gap between Blade Runner (1982) and Blade Runner 2049 (2017). Blade Runner: Black Out 2022 (2017) is the first in the row, followed by "2036: Nexus Dawn" and 2048: Nowhere to Run (2017). "Black Out 2022" is made by anime director Shin'ichirô Watanabe, who is famous for his work on The Animatrix (2003) and Cowboy Bebop (1998). "2036: Nexus Dawn" and "2048: Nowhere to Run" are made by Luke Scott, who is known for his short films connected to Alien: Covenant (2017) and Prometheus (2012).
The replicant comes to his end in an identical submissive pose as Roy Batty in the original. Luke Scott who directed the short film, is the son of the original Blade Runner director Ridley Scott.
"Lawmaker: Mr. Wallace, we've granted you this meeting in efforts to your contributions. Magistrate #2: Your essential contributions. Magistrate #4: We recognize that for the greater good. Niander Wallace: You remember hunger? So you indulge the recluse whose patents keep that hunger at bay? I believe in life. In fact, I have wrung more life from our earth than ever before. But it is dying. You - are dying. Which brings us to our present concern. Lawmaker: Prohibition. Magistrate #4: We have made clear our position. Magistrate #3: The prohibition of replicant technology is not subject to debate. Magistrate #2: Nor, is its repeat. Niander Wallace: Yet... we are debating."
"Niander Wallace: Humanity has only survived this long by crushing the earth to suit its needs."
