The screenplay is inspired by Dame Agatha Christie's 1969 novel "Hallowe'en Party", with the setting changed from the UK to Venice, Italy. It is the first time this story has been adapted into a feature film.
Jamie Dornan and Jude Hill were previously directed by Sir Kenneth Branagh in Belfast (2021). In that film, Hill's character is seen opening Christmas presents, one of which is a copy of "Hallowe'en Party", which is the original title of this new project.
Michelle Yeoh dropped out of The Electric State (2024) to star in this movie.
The book upon which this film is based, "Hallowe'en Party" by Dame Agatha Christie, is dedicated to comedic author and satirist, as well as "Jeeves and Wooster" creator, P.G. Wodehouse.
This will be the first Poirot installment in the film series starring, directed by and produced by Sir Kenneth Branagh to be an original adaptation of a literary work written by Dame Agatha Christie and not a remake of a previous picture featuring Poirot. However, it was previously adapted for television as part of series 12 of Poirot (1989), starring David Suchet as Poirot.
