This is Michelle Pfeiffer's first attempt at Shakespeare since her debut as an actress in a New York stage production of Twelfth Night.
Take a look at what some of the other performers are rehearsing while the Mechanicals are waiting for word from the Duke. One group of players are rehearsing Sophocles' Oedipus Rex and another pair of players are rehearsing a scene from William Shakespeare's play Othello.
Although it appears to be an idyllic location, the shoot was anything but. Five weeks of filming almost completely at night quickly took its toll on an increasingly unhinged cast and crew, whilst all the lush greenery ultimately became poisonous (the studio set was in an aircraft-sized hangar where the plants all started decaying, releasing all sorts of noxious gases into the atmosphere).
Some of the orchestral score is from Felix Mendelssohn's 1843 incidental music for this William Shakespeare play. It has also been used in Frederick Ashton's 1964 ballet adaptation of the play, "The Dream", and in George Balanchine's ballet version of the play. The 1935 film version of A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935) also used generous chunks of Mendelssohn's music.
The cast features three Oscar-winners (Kevin Kline, Sam Rockwell and Christian Bale) and three nominees (Michelle Pfeiffer, Stanley Tucci and David Strathairn).
"[Last lines] Puck: If we shadows have offended, / Think but this, and all is mended, / That you have but slumber'd here / While these visions did appear. / And this weak and idle theme, / No more yielding but a dream, / Gentles, do not reprehend: / If you pardon we will mend. / Else the Puck a liar call. / Give me your hands, if we be friends, / And Robin shall restore amends."
"Lysander: The course of true love never did run smooth."
