Owen Cooper's (Jamie Miller) debut acting role. Stephen Graham was so impressed at his first audition, that he turned to co-writer Jack Thorne when Cooper left the room and said 'I think that's him'. The acting skills he learned only came from attending The Drama Mob theatre group once a week, which was co-founded by Coronation Street star Tina O'Brien. He is next set to appear as young Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights (2026), alongside Margot Robbie and Jacob Elorfi.
Mrs Bailey is played by Hannah Walters, who in real-life is the wife of Stephen Graham (Eddie Miller). Walters appears in many films and TV series in which her husband has a main role, including This is England (2006), Funny Cow (2017), Walk Like a Panther (2018), Time (2021-TV Series), Boiling Point (2021) and A Thousand Blows (2024-TV Series).
Adolescence bows out with an emotional rendition of Aurora's "Through the Eyes of a Child," which describes the loss of (and subsequent longing for) a "childlike soul." Director Barantini initially heard the song around the time Thorne sent him the premiere script, and the director immediately knew it needed to be part of the series. "I couldn't stop thinking about it," he says. "It's just absolutely incredible."
Filmed mainly in South Kirkby, West Yorkshire from July to September 2024. The Miller family's house was not a real house, but was a set built on Production Park, as was the police station. The school scenes were, however, shot at a real school in Sheffield. Some of the show's outdoor shots were filmed in South Elmsall, Wakefield, and in London.
