The source novel ''The Paraffin Child'' by Stephen Blanchard was set in Hull, England. On writer-director Simone Horrocks's return to live in New Zealand, she relocated the story to Piha, a small settlement on Auckland's wild West Coast, which was part of the neighbourhood Horrocks had grown up in and knew well.

The picture was filmed in and around Piha, a small settlement on Auckland's wild West Coast, in the North Island of New Zealand, during April and May 2009.

The film was made and first released about eleven years after its source novel ''The Paraffin Child'' by Stephen Blanchard was first published in 1999.
