Blood Review

"Blood" is a horror thriller that aims to explore the ethical dilemmas faced by a mother whose son is infected by a deadly virus after being bitten by the family dog. However, despite its promising premise, the film fails to deliver on both the horror and ethical fronts. Michelle Monaghan's central performance is undoubtedly the highlight of the film, but the script fails to offer her enough material to work with. The film sets up the impossible situation faced by Jess, a nurse and recovering addict, as she tries to save her son's life while keeping her actions hidden from her ex-husband and the hospital staff. However, as the plot progresses, Jess's actions become increasingly inconsistent and hard to empathize with, leaving the audience disconnected from her plight. Director Brad Anderson, who has previously made successful horror films, fails to elevate the material beyond its pedestrian screenplay by Will Honley. While the film's early scenes build some tension, the convoluted plot machinations of the concluding scenes leave a lot of questions unanswered and are more likely to elicit unintentional laughter than chills. "Blood" presents a missed opportunity to explore the moral quandaries of a mother trying to save her child's life. Despite Michelle Monaghan's strong performance, the film fails to engage or frighten, making it a forgettable addition to the horror genre.
