Natalie Wood decided to gamble her standard fee on a percentage of the gross, earning $3 million. She had earlier declined a similar offer with West Side Story (1961).
Donald F. Muhich, who played Alice Henderson's therapist, was director Paul Mazursky's real-life therapist. He later appeared in three other Mazursky films. Filmmaker Paul Mazursky frequently cast his real life analyst, Donald F. Muhich, in his movies. Muhich played a psychiatrist in 'Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice' (1969), an analyst in 'Blume in Love' (1973), a psychiatrist in 'Willie & Phil' (1980), and Dr. Von Zimmer in 'Down and Out in Beverly Hills' (1986).
Actors who turned down roles in the film included Warren Beatty, Robert Redford, Steve McQueen, Tuesday Weld, Jane Fonda and Faye Dunaway.

In 1973, US network ABC developed this movie into a sitcom, Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1973). It aired for seven episodes before it was canceled due to awful ratings and reviews. Most of the subtext about wife-swapping was eliminated, predictably (since it was 1973 and they couldn't really explore issues like that on network television). The series is most noteworthy for casting a young Jodie Foster as Elizabeth Henderson, Ted and Alice's daughter.
"Ted Henderson: First, we'll have an orgy. Then we'll go see Tony Bennett."
"Alice Henderson: You know how children are, they're very curious. He wanted to know why I had a tee-tee... Psychiatrist: Pardon me? I don't know what a tee-tee is. Alice Henderson: A vagina. Psychiatrist: Oh, it's a pet expression of yours. Alice Henderson: Yes, you know words: tee-tee, tinkle, po-po, wee-wee, kee-kee, poo-poo. Psychiatrist: I had never heard tee-tee before. Alice Henderson: What expression do you use with your children? Psychiatrist: Vagina."
