In preparation for her role as Loretta Lynn, Sissy Spacek accompanied the singer on one of her tours in order to study her on/offstage mannerisms.
Sissy Spacek's Best Actress Oscar win for playing Loretta Lynn created a rarity in the Academy's history in that the real-life Loretta Lynn was in the audience witnessing the victory. That same evening, boxer Jake LaMotta was in the pavilion audience when Robert De Niro won the Best Actor statuette for his portrayal of LaMotta in Raging Bull (1980), making the event even rarer.
Loretta Lynn is said to have fainted when she saw Levon Helm in full makeup and wardrobe, because of his amazing resemblance to her real father.
According to Loretta Lynn, her husband Doolittle wanted nothing to do with Tommy Lee Jones, who was playing him, until shortly before shooting began in Butcher Holler. Jones rented a Jeep, got drunk on moonshine, and went tearing through the town in the vehicle, only to get arrested for drunk driving, beat up for resisting arrest and jailed. Doolittle liked him immediately after that.
Although Loretta Lynn handpicked Sissy Spacek to portray her on screen, original director Joseph Sargent was against the casting, feeling that Spacek didn't have enough of a resemblance to Lynn. Universal Pictures felt otherwise, bought out Sargent's contract and hired Michael Apted to direct.
"Loretta Lynn: [in a radio interview] Shoot, we've been driving so much, I don't know where I am half the time. But it's fun. We sing, and talk, and Doo - that's my husband - he'll get to acting horny. Speedy West: [shocked] What! Loretta Lynn: And the more I laugh, the hornier he gets, and then he'll say, "Loretta, spread me up another one of them baloney sandwiches!" Radio station manager: [later] I don't know where in the hell you think you are, lady, but that kind of smut don't go in this part of the country! Loretta Lynn: I didn't know it was dirty! I thought "horny" meant cuttin' up and acting silly!"
"Loretta Lynn: [to Doolittle] An' stoppa that growlin'. You sound like a big ol' bar."
