Ray Liotta's final completed film role before his tragic passing on May 26, 2022. Liotta passed away a week after he came to re-record his lines in post-production. Elizabeth Banks says that Liotta praised the look of the bear when he got a look at the creature.
Inspired in part by a true event in 1985 when a corrupt Kentucky cop and lawyer-turned-drug smuggler, Andrew Thornton, flew in a smuggling run, dumping packages of cocaine over Georgia before attempting to escape with nearly 80 pounds of it strapped to his body. However, the parachute malfunctioned (possibly from the extra weight), and Thornton fell to his death in a Knoxville, TN resident's driveway. 40 kilos of the thrown packages landed in a national forest and were consumed by a black bear who overdosed most likely within minutes, dying from cerebral hemorrhaging and respiratory and heart failure, after eating $20 million-worth ($55 million adjusted for inflation). With the lone exceptions of Thornton and the bear, no other casualties have ever been reported.
"Cocaine Bear" was intended to be a temporary working title. The producers decided to release it under that name as they "...couldn't think of anything else".
Very loosely based on an actual bear that died after ingesting cocaine which was dumped from an airplane. No rampage by the bear actually happened. In fact, no attacks by the bear were recorded at all. Rather, this was inspired by a Reddit post's recounting of the story, in which they conclude "there was probably a five minute window before he died where he was the most dangerous apex predator on the continent."
The film opens with "Jane" by Jefferson Starship, just as one of Elizabeth Banks' first film roles, Wet Hot American Summer, did.
"Bear: ROWR!"
"Tom: [as the Cocaine Bear chases them] Shoot it! Shoot it! Damn it, not the tree, the big fucking bear! Ranger Liz: Shut up!"
