It was originally planned to be a feature film adaptation of the musical with filming done on location in Newfoundland and using its community as extras, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on the film industry and performing arts, those plans were canceled in favor of a live film recording of the Broadway production.
Scheduled to be released in September 2021, on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
The original show's profanity was toned down for this version in order to achieve a PG-13 rating. When Oz states what "STFD" stands for, the word that begins with "F" is muted. Also, Kevin T. telling the woman behind him "we are freaking the f**k" out was changed to "we are freaking the freak out". However, Claude's reaction to the large number of planes arriving ("Holy shit!") is uncensored.
The musical's NYC premiere on Broadway was at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on March 12, 2017.
Filmed in May 2021 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre.
"Oz Fudge and others: And that time of day, people are in a bit of a rush to get to work and stuff, so normally I sit there and run my radar. And if they're speeding, I'll stop 'em and write out a warning ticket. I'll write "STFD"... "Slow The **** Down.""
"Garth, Kevin Tuerff and others, Ali, Kevin Jung and others, Hannah O'Rourke and others, Diane Gray and others: [In unison] Who am I if I don't feel like the me from yesterday?"
