Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly, who portray Charles Darwin and his wife in the movie, are actually married in real life.
Charles Darwin married his cousin Emma Wedgwood. They had ten children together.
Harbour scenes were filmed in Charlestown, St.Austell, Cornwall, UK, the same area used by Tim Burton a few weeks earlier for Alice in Wonderland (2010). The same extras casting agency was used as well.
Anne Elizabeth "Annie" Darwin's death (2nd March, 1841 - 23rd April, 1851) may have been caused by scarlet fever, or tuberculosis as some may believe.
Bettany previously - in Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) - played a naturalist who - like Darwin - travelled with ship to the Galapagos Islands in the early 19th century to make discoveries strongly indicating evolution among animals.
"Thomas Huxley: Mr Darwin, sir? Either you are being disingenuous or you do not fully understand your own theory. Evidently, what is true of the barnacle is true of all creatures, even humans. The Almighty can no longer claim to have authored every species in under a week. You've killed God, sir! You've killed God!"
"[from trailer] Charles Darwin: Suppose the whole world stopped believing that God had any sort of plan for us?"
