As lead actress Marcia Gay Harden was relatively unknown when she starred in this Kiwi film a number of people mistakenly actually thought she was from New Zealand.

The film premiered in 1992 and was followed by the next year by the unrelated but similarly titled Hollywood thriller movie 'The Crush' (1993).

Last dramatic feature film shot in New Zealand by Kiwi director Alison Maclean until 'The Rehearsal' (2016) - an interval of about twenty-four years.

The film was nominated for 8 New Zealand Film and TV Awards in 1993 including Best Film, Best Director - Alison Maclean, Best Script, and Best Male Supporting Performance for William Zappa. In the end the film won 4 gongs - for Best Female Dramatic Performance in Film for Caitlin Bossley; Best Female Supporting Performance in Film for Donogh Rees; Best Soundtrack for Greg Bell, Kit Rollings & Mike Hopkins and Best Film Score for Antony Partos and the Jean Paul Sartre Experience.
