Dave Chappelle funded this project with his own money.
Concertgoers had to register on-line, then were told to meet at a secret location in the Chinatown section of Manhattan. From there, they were bussed to the concert location, which was also kept secret. The majority of the acts that would be appearing were also kept secret from the concertgoers. Admission to the concert was free.
This was the first time Fugees (Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill, Pras Michel) performed together in seven years.
During a scene of the concert, rapper J. Cole can be clearly seen in the crowd.
The college marching band used is Central State University from Wilberforce, Ohio.
"Dave Chappelle: [playing bongos in front of a crowd] 5,000 black people chillin' in the rain. 19 white people peppered in the crowd. Trying to find a Mexican."
"Dave Chappelle: Did you hear the one about the industrious prostitute? Mos Def: No, Dave. Dave Chappelle: She had a vagina implanted on her hip. Mos Def: Why, Dave? Dave Chappelle: So she could make some money on the side! Dave Chappelle: BAM!"
