Some twenty years ago Sarita promised to raise her husband's love child (Shalu) together with their own daughter (Nimmi). The girls grow up as the best of friends but Sarita has never been able to forgive Shalu her background. It doesn't make it better when she sees Shalu getting close to the man Nimmi is also in love with.

Hum Tumhare Hain" from HUM TUMHARE HAIN SANAM (2002) and "Dil Laga Liya" in DIL HAI TUMHARA (2002), although both have been taken from a Pakistani Punjabi Hit of HADIQA "Boohey Baariyan.
In 1991, Rajkumar Santoshi had teamed Sunny Deol, Madhuri Dixit,Dimple Kapadia [guest appearance], Meenakshi Seshadri and Salman Khan (Replaced Jackie Shroff) to make this film. Rishi Kapoor was earlier approached for Salman's role but he declined.The film was titled "Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere". Shekhar Kapur had also been signed to enact a key role in the film. An official announcement was made in October 1991 but the film never got made then. It was then re titled Dil Hain Tumhara.In 1995, Rajkumar Santoshi attempted to restart the film with Shah Rukh Khan, Sanjay Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai. Once again due to unknown problems the film got shelved.. Finally Santoshi shelved the film and years later sold his script to Ramesh Taurani.
Sharmila Tagore was signed for Rekha's role but opted out.
Tabu was approached for Mahima' s role.
The film brought back Kundan Sharma and Preity after Kya Kehna.
