TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

Though it has been common in recent years for films or cable programs featuring graphic language to have words bleeped out when they are shown on a regular broadcast channel or on a more censorious family values network, this was one of the first times where, as a gag in a theatrical release, some of Mickey Shaughnessy's supposedly rough words were indicated by comic bleeps on the soundtrack. In the novel the character's language was also so blue that it was bleeped out on the written page.

Three years earlier Russ Tamblyn and Jeff Richards played two of the Pontipee brothers in "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers".

Howard Smith ( Admiral Boatwright) also played General Bush in "No Time For Sergeants" (1958) staring Andy Griffith and Don Knotts of the Andy Griffith television show.

Ernest Borgnine was considered for the role of Lt. Siegel.

This film was preceded one year earlier by "The Teahouse of the August Moon", also by MGM, and starring Glenn Ford. Both films look, sound, and have similar enough premises that they are often confused with each other.

Popular Dialogues

"Lt. Ross Pendleton: [describing the running of the grunion] During this time of the year the slippery little creatures come up on the beach, stop, spawn, then go out to sea again. Lt. Alice Tomlen: Sounds like some naval officers I know."

"Ens. Tyson: You know, she knows darn well that little piece of black lace is showin' up above her shirt. Lt. Ross Pendleton: You know what she is? A sadist. I know these black underwear kind of women."
