Satire | War
Set in 2006, the film follows Fayruz, an aspiring actress working at a U.S. military base in the California desert. The base houses 'Atropia,' a simulated Iraqi village where actors help train soldiers for deployment. Fayruz, one of the few performers of actual Iraqi heritage, sees this as a stepping stone to Hollywood. Her reality is complicated when she develops feelings for a soldier who is playing the role of an insurgent, forcing them both to confront the absurd and serious nature of their simulated war.

The film is an expansion of Hailey Gates' 2019 short film 'Shako Mako,' which also starred Alia Shawkat.
It won the Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.
The concept is based on real-life military training facilities that use simulated environments and role-players to prepare soldiers for deployment.
The film's budget received Californian tax credits for production.
