IMDbBest Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role Drama | 2002 | Brittany
Budget 50,000,000 USD
Box Office Collection 100,020,092 USD
Two of the film's main actresses later died at young age. Brittany Murphy (Elisabeth) passed away from pneumonia coupled with anemia and drug intoxication in 2009 at age 32 while Skye McCole Bartusiak (Jessie) suffered an accidental drug overdose at age 21 in 2014.
The famous way Brittany Murphy sings "I'll never tell" was improvised by the actress.
The Canal Street subway station was actually filmed in Toronto's "Bay Lower" unused subway station. $150,000 was spent on set dressing alone. The TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) was so impressed with the New York conversion that they actually requested the set to be left up after filming was completed to attract future filming revenue. The set remained for about three weeks until TTC fire inspectors deemed the set a hazard (steel girders, signs and benches were plastic and wood), so the set was torn down and disposed of.
Set for release some two weeks after the September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks, there were talks among the filmmakers about delaying the picture but they ultimately decided to hold their ground. As the film is set in New York, director Gary Fleder and his team rushed to replace shots of the World Trade Center from the finished film. The opening featured the Twin Towers but was replaced with a view towards Brooklyn instead.
Skye McCole Bartusiak was particularly proud of the fact that she taught Famke Janssen to play with a GameBoy during shooting. (In the movie, Janssen's character has to play GameBoy.)

Sean Bean actually spoke to Michael Douglas and Famke Janssen on the cell phones during filming.
"Elisabeth: You want what they want, don't you... I'll never tell. I'll never tell... Any of you."
"[Detective Cassidy tries to get Dr. Sax to tell her about the scheme] Detective Cassidy: Why don't you quit wasting my fucking time and tell me who's "we"?"
