The film was first written about a male and female couple with Sergio being a man, but Miguel Arteta and Alia Shawkat had a hard time casting the role. Once Laia Costa auditioned for the film, they felt that she had just the right grasp on the character, and changed the story to two females.
All of the dialogue was improvised.
Filming took 10 days. The second act of the film was shot in real time over the course of 24 hours.
