New Line Cinema were hoping that lead actor Thomas Ian Griffith would become a studio/stable star, similar to then-future owner Warner's then-arrangement with Steven Seagal.
Jon Hess was chosen as director after forming a close relationship with New Line Cinema when he was pitching his take on "Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III".
The film only ever received a regional (major cities only) release in the U.S. before being sent to video.
when first released on VHS in the UK in 1993 there was an urgent distributor recall a few days after release when they realized they had accidentally released a cut of the film that had not been certified by the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification). Replacement tapes which had the cut certified by the BBFC had to be sent out to rental shops.
In the first five minutes of this movie, Thomas Ian Griffith's character, Terry McCain sings Danny Boy, which is a popular Irish song. Griffith played another character named Terry in The Karate Kid: Part III where he calls Daniel LaRusso "Danny Boy".
"Terry McCain: Give it up. Hitman #2: Fuck you! Terry McCain: Oh, that's original."
"Terry McCain: Before they blew his head off, they smashed his knees. His knees, for Christ's sake."
