In a March 2001 interview with "Shout" magazine, Fairuza Balk stated that out of all her films, this was her favorite. She indicated that "this film is very close to my heart. As a girl, I was very much like my character Shade. I was shy. I was a loner."
The letter telling Nora about Trudi's absences from school gives the name of the school principal as Allison Anders, the director of the film.
Elvia Rivera (the Mexican movie goddess) was named after director Allison Anders' landlord.
Although based on Richard Peck's novel "Don't Look and It Won't Hurt", much of the film is informed by director Allison Anders' own experiences growing up with a single mother.
Set in the fictional New Mexico town of Laramie, it's actually mostly filmed in Deming.
"Raymond: [barely playing along as if they were strangers] So, what line of work are you in, Miss Evans? Nora: Oh please, call me Nora. Raymond: Nora. Nora, Nora... Nora: I'm a brain surgeon, mainly. How 'bout you? Raymond: I'm a grave digger myself. Um, digging my own as we speak. Rapidly. Nora: Well that makes two things you do quick."
"[last lines] Shade: [voice-over] He didn't leave her. And now, after all that has happened, it was the single gesture, the one true heart, which has already changed the paths of daughters not yet heard from, those not yet born. He was hers 'til the end. Until the end of time."
