Budget 2,000,000 USD
The scenes with the bear howling were simulated. In reality, the bear standing up on hind legs was happily "smiling" and begging for marshmallows. The roaring sounds were dubbed in later.
The bear's name is Koda. Despite the fact that the bear in the movie is female, Koda is male. In places where the filming was too dangerous for a real bear, an actor in a bear suit was employed.
In the original script treatment, the bear was intended to die at the end of the movie.
"Wes Harding: You OK? Lauren Findley: My head is cracked open, my best friend is dead, the car flipped over and no, I'm not OK!"
"Lauren Findley: Oh, my God. Wes Harding: Okay. I want you get out of here. Lauren Findley: Wes, what are you saying? Wes Harding: Look, I want to distract it, okay? She's drawn to blood. I use my clothes as a decoy. Lauren Findley: I think that we should go back to the cabins and see if there's some weapon we can use or something else. Wes Harding: You need to get out of here, okay? Lauren Findley: Wes... Wes Harding: Go Please"
