On May 19, 2012, a bronze statue of the Japanese dog Hachiko was unveiled at the train depot at Woonsocket Depot Square where the film was shot. It is an exact replica of the bronze statue of Hachiko which resides in front of Shibuya Station in Japan.
Hachi is portrayed by three dogs: Chico, Layla, and Forrest.
When Parker searches information about Akita on Internet, he comes across a picture of Ueno and Hachiko from 1924.
After Hachiko's Master died, Hachiko was taken in by the Gardener of the Ueno family.
Hachi is a Japanese Akita/Akita Ainu from the mountainous northern regions of Japan.
The role of Hachi was played by three different Akitas: Chico, Layla, and Forrest.
Richard Gere, an animal lover and activist, was deeply moved by the story and also served as a producer on the film.
"Ken: [Talking in Japanese] It's been a year, hasn't it? I wake up sometimes in the middle of the night and think about Parker. He was a good friend. I understand how you feel. Hachi, my friend, Parker is never coming home. But if Hachiko wants to wait, then Hachiko should wait. You want to wait for him, don't you? Have a long life, Hachi."
"Cate Wilson: Hachi? Hachi? Oh, old thing! You're still waiting. That's right. If it's all right, could I wait with you for the next train? Yeah? Thanks."
