Anthony Spadaccini chose not to follow the marketing strategy of similar "found footage" horror films like The Blair Witch Project (1999) and present Head Case (2007) as real footage. Instead, he marketed it strictly as a fictional documentary with cast members (including those who played victims) attending screenings. Despite this, some audience members were still convinced (at first) that the footage they were watching was indeed real.

There was no actual shooting script. However, the production team worked from a detailed treatment, which included extensive histories on the main characters, their traits, some fast facts about each of them, their motivations, etc. The actual dialogue was completely improvised. Each scene was written and given to the actors the day of the shoot. There were bullet points specifying what had to be said or accomplished during each particular scene.
"Andrea Montgomery: Now you're eating breakfast? And why aren't you eating with a knife and a fork? You know better than that! Didn't your mother teach you any manners?
