Documentary | 1986 | Ken
Ken Burns made this film at the same time that he made "The Statue of Liberty" (1985). He said in an interview that it wasn't as difficult as people might assume, for two reasons. One, reason is that he enlisted the help of two others to co-produce the films (one for each film). The other reason is, according to Burns, that both films (all of his films, for that matter, he said) are asking the same question that he never answers definitively: "Who are we Americans?"
"Huey Long: I have the pleasure to undertake to describe to you-- [A photographer's flashbulb explodes with a loud bang and a flash. A long pause and laughter from all.] Huey Long: Now you see there? That bomb didn't explode until tonight."
"Mrs. Hodding Carter: And when he spoke, it was a dynamic experience for all of us, whether you were for him or against him. And the people near the front would say, "Give it to them, Huey, give it to them!" and way in the back someone would say, "Go to hell!""
