The young woman's critique of A Woman Under the Influence (1974) is taken verbatim from film critic Pauline Kael's review of the movie. Earlier in the film, a copy of Kael's review collection For Keeps can be seen in Jake's childhood bedroom (though ironically, that particular review does not appear in that book).
According to director Charlie Kaufman, Netflix pushed back against the film's 1.37:1 aspect ratio because they were concerned that viewers would think there was something wrong with their TV.
Brie Larson was originally cast before being replaced by Jessie Buckley. Larson had to step down to focus on Captain Marvel (2019) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).
In an interview, Jessie Buckley stated that, when she received the script, Charlie Kaufman described her character (The Young Woman) as "Molecular".
The unnamed girl mentions homosexuality being considered a pathology in the DSM before 1973. The DSM is the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders". Homosexuality was added in 1952. A large study was made ten years later. The researchers argued that homosexuality should be included and stay in the DSM as it was believed male homosexuality was caused by a fear of the opposite sex as a result of traumatic child-parent relationships. Evelyn Hooker, however, researched and argued the comparison between happy and well-adjusted homosexual men and heterosexual men and found no difference. Homosexuality remained in the DSM until may of 1974.
"Young Woman: It's tragic how few people possess their souls before they die. Nothing is more rare in any man, says Emerson, than an act of his own. And it's quite true. Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation. That's an Oscar Wilde quote."
"Young Woman: Other animals live in the present. Humans cannot, so they invented hope."
