This movie was expertly dubbed into Mandarin and widely released in China in the 1980s with huge success. Until today it has been considered as the best dubbed movie ever in China and has been loved and remembered by tens of millions of audiences across the country. The dubbed version was also release on audio cassette tape.
As with most made-for-TV films of that era, this film premiered theatrically in Europe, but was only shown on television in the United States.
James Mason had long dreamed of setting Susannah York up a "Jane Eyre" movie through his production company at Fox. He had considered Joanne Woodward as Jane in the '50s, and had even announced Susannah York as his Jane in 1964, but the announcement of this TV film ended any plans he had to get his version off the ground.
