  • Story:
The film is notable for presenting a more human Jesus, compared to more solemn portrayals in earlier films; here Jesus laughs and cries like anyone else. Among other things, he weeps at Joseph’s funeral, throws stones in Lake Galilee when meeting Simon Peter and James son of Zebedee for the first time, dances at the wedding at Cana, and starts a water-splashing fight with his disciples as well. Satan is portrayed as a man in modern dress (and as a woman in red). During his temptation of Jesus, he shows him the Earth from the vantage point of space. Satan also shows Jesus images of wars and destruction carried out in his name. The film adds an apocryphal Roman historian named “Livio” who watches and comments as events unfold; he is presumably named after Livy.

TRIVIA

Trivia

Jeremy Sisto is actually a practicing Buddhist due to his father, though he grew up having Roman Catholic faith.

Gary Oldman was initially offered the role of the male Satan. He turned it down, but asked for a different role which turned out to be Pontius Pilate. The role of Satan (male counterpart) ultimately went to Jeroen Krabbé.

Jeremy Sisto was twenty-five years old when he performed both the thirty and thirty-three-year-old Jesus.

Evangelist John MacArthur has criticized the series for it's lack of authenticity and unrealistic crucifixion scene as a Jew from the crowd (not dressed as a Roman) nails Jesus to the cross. This was also a big problem with the mini series Jesus of Nazareth.

It aired in the same year as 'Mary: Mother of Jesus (1999) (TV)', which featured Christian Bale as Jesus. Jeremy Sisto went on to voice Batman in 'Justice League: The New Frontier (2008)(TV)'. Christian Bale played Batman in Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012). Also appearing was Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon, who portrays Pontius Pilate in this film.
