Jhumura is an emotional movie that's a little sluggish but still interesting. So treat your finer senses for a change by watching something far off from mindless bloodshed and item numbers. Poetry in motion is jhumura. And the director's own slow-moving (sometimes a little too slow-moving) yet seamless screenplay and Mrinmoy Nandi's great photography are partly to thank for it. The film stands out for the simple splendour of each scene and the considerations that went into producing such a visual tapestry, from connecting the dots with a silent mask-seller to depicting the haplessness of Kanchan's first wife (Tania) with a dried leaf tossed around by a breeze. Two young journalists from Kolkata, Rwik (Samadarshi) and Sahana (Sohini), travel to Purulia to research the vanishing traditional art genre of jhumur. They encounter an old couple (Kuchil Mukherjee and Gopa Sengupta) who share with them the tale of the musical romance between Kanchan and Kusum and the tribal settlement of Jhumura. Overall, Jhumura is a slow-moving yet emotionally compelling movie. So treat your finer senses for a change by watching something far off from mindless bloodshed and item numbers. You won't be sorry.
