Rotten TomatoesThe first season of "Justified," which Graham Yost adapted from Elmore Leonard's book "Fire in the Hole," endures for a number of reasons. Each new investigation is as approachable as it is compelling thanks to the show's one case per season format. U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant), the film's lead, is a traditional cowboy in a contemporary setting. He doesn't always defy convention but steadfastly upholds his own sense of right and wrong. Olyphant's soothing drawl and endearing fortitude, which are laced with short jokes and blunt advise, go a long way on their own, but any evaluation of "Justified" must also give Boyd Crowder, who is portrayed by the great Walton Goggins with legendary verbosity and vigour, equal weight. It wasn't that Raylan and Boyd were constantly on opposing sides, but rather that their lives ran in such constant parallel to one another that their distinctions were all but erased. "Justified" flourished as a two-hander for six seasons. Whatever separated them ultimately came down to the thin blue line that is the legal system, or what's left of it. Boyd's captivating brand of anarchy intensifies as their parallels develop, their deeds and wants converge, and the U.S. Marshal begins to doubt whether what he's doing is actually... right. Raylan must think that he is stopping this from happening.
