In November of 2024 it was confirmed the series will take place in 2120, which is two years before the events of the original Alien (1979) which takes place in 2122, 17 years before the hit video game Alien: Isolation (2014) set in 2137, 22 years before the latest film Alien: Romulus (2024) set in 2142, and 59 years before Aliens (1986) & Alien³ (1992) which both take place in 2179.It's also been confirmed by Noah Hawley that the events of the prequels Prometheus (2012) & Alien: Covenant (2017) will largely be ignored.
Series creator and showrunner Noah Hawley has confirmed that if Alien: Earth is a hit, he sees a day, perhaps several seasons down the road, when its events might directly connect to the events of Alien (1979).
FX chief John Landgraf has stated that the story will not feature any characters from the films, including Ellen Ripley, He said. "It's the first story, that takes place on Earth. It takes place on our planet."
A series set in the "Alien" universe from Noah Hawley is officially set up at FX, Variety has learned. The announcement was made Thursday by FX chief John Landgraf as part of the Disney Investor Day presentation. Hawley will write and executive produce the series under his 26 Keys banner, with "Alien" mastermind Ridley Scott in advanced talks to executive produce via Scott Free. FX Productions will produce. Per Landgraf, the show is "Set not too far into our future."
This will be the first time a film or series in the canon Alien universe actually takes place on Earth, save for the brief opening scene of Prometheus (2012) that takes place on the Isle of Skye in Scotland; this will also be the first time a Xenomorph is shown on Earth. In Aliens (1986) Ripley wakes up in a hospital on a space station orbiting Earth, but none of the scenes take place planet-side. Similarly the final scene of Alien: Resurrection (1997) takes place in low Earth orbit, with the USM Auriga burning up in the atmosphere and the freighter Betty entering the upper atmosphere, but the film ends before the surface is seen. Alien vs. Predator (2004) takes place in Antarctica and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007) in a small town in the mountains of Colorado. However both of these are stand-alone films, Ridley Scott has stated that he does not consider them canon to the Alien films, but that they are canon to Predator (1987).
