Sanjeev Kumar felt cheated by the producers. Sanjeev held 25% partnership of the films profits. The film ran for over 15 weeks. The was made on a small budget. Sanjeev kept asking for his 25%. He was told the film was in the red (flopped). These things would make him feel bad. Sanjeev stated money did not matter that much, because Gulzar and Sanjeev decided to make a offbeat film once a year. Koshish was a risky subject. The industry use to say that the film was only being made for Sanjeev and Gulzar to see. The industry felt no one would come to see such a film where the lead couple were mute. Due to this Gulzar and Sanjeev took less remuneration. After all of that,Gulzar and Sanjeev deserved some money at least.
The film was released with Parichaiy where Sanjeev was Jaya's father, and both films were box office hits.
Moushami Chatterjee was signed for the film, but kept making illogical demands like expensive sarees. Gulzar finally replaced her with Jaya Badhuri.
The film was inspired by the 1961 Japanese film 'Happiness of Us Alone'. The film was remade in Tamil in 1977 as 'Uyarndhavargal' starring Kamal Haasan and Sujatha.
The movie earned Sanjeev Kumar his second National Film Award for Best Actor after 'Dastak' (1971).
