Laura Dern's mother, Diane Ladd, refused to give her permission to travel to shoot on location, as she felt Dern was too young. Dern sued for legal emancipation, won it, and did the movie anyway.
In a May 2019 interview with Christine Smallwood in the New York Times Magazine, Laura Dern said that she was never interested in abusing drugs because Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols "pulled her aside" on the set and "scared her straight" when she was 13. She recalled to Smallwood, "I was saying to my mom, 'Who knew that the best thing to do would be to send your daughter to do a movie with the Sex Pistols for five months?'"
The final sequence was shot and added on after initial reaction to the film was unsatisfactory. Laura Dern is noticeably taller in these shots.
Nancy Dowd was inspired to write the screenplay after she saw the punk rock band Ramones perform live in concert.
Writer Nancy Dowd was unsatisfied with the editing and final cut, so he changed her name to "Rob Morton" on the credits. The reality was Dowd's involvement with the movie ended early in the production process when she was groped onset by a camera operator.
