This film reunites Viola Davis and Jennifer Lopez for the first time in 17 years since Out of Sight (1998).
Charlize Theron was the first choice to play Eve Rafael, but was already committed to Dark Places (2015), a project that had a similar tone to the character at the moment, and ended up passing on it. The role eventually went to Jennifer Lopez.
Julius Tennon is Viola Davis' real-life husband. They have an adopted daughter together, and he has a son and daughter from previous relationships. His character is not the father of her sons in the film.
Lila & Eve premiered on January 30, 2015 at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah. On February 26, 2015, Samuel Goldwyn Films acquired the North American rights to the film.
