The first three series end with the same line of dialogue: "Now what?"
Writer Neil Cross said that DCI John Luther is actually a combination of Sherlock Holmes and Columbo (1971); he takes the intelligence and ability to solve crimes from Holmes and the introverted detective formula from Columbo.
Over the 5 seasons Luther drives 4 different Volvos although 2 have the same registration plate.
Massive Attack performs the theme songs for both Luther and House. Both lead characters are based, to a degree, on Sherlock Holmes.
At the beginning of episode 4: season 5, an advertisement for the film "Pacific Rim" can be seen on a double-decker bus. "Luther" star, Idris Elba, also appears in that film. It could therefore be argued, in fan theory, that (fictional) John Luther happens to be a coincidental look-a-like for Idris Elba, or within the story universe, the "Pacific Rim" casting was totally different.
"Alice Morgan: Some little girls grow up wanting ponies. I always wanted to be a widow."
"Alice Morgan: So, I've got bullets but no gun. That's quite zen."
