The movie Mersal is purely enjoyable and uses Vijay's star power well. Despite the narrative being a retread, the screenplay is entertaining. Vijay is well-cast in all three of his roles, while Thalapathy makes a dramatic second-half entrance. The fight sequences are wonderfully curated and have sleek action as well as lots of humor. There are plenty of Atlee's signature moments in this film, including the victim getting the final laugh, a clever story thread, or a plot point emerging a strong intermission, lots of comedy, obnoxiously loud dance routines, and a social message without being too preachy. SJ Surya plays a well-written villain who consumes the scenery on screen. Vadivelu and Sathyaraj make up a substantial supporting cast, giving several sequences more punch. The magnificent background music establishes and accentuates the Mersal grandeur. The songs are excellent as well and overall, the film is entertaining and definitely worth the watch.
