After Govinda and Pahlaj Nihalani had a falling out, Govinda claimed Pahlaj tried to sabotage Muqabla. Pahlaj went to the distributor of Muqabla and told him he should not pay more than 20 lakhs for the film. Pahlaj told the distributor that Govinda's films were only going for that price. The reason Pahlaj was bitter was because Govinda had no faith in the movie Aankhen while it was in the making. Govinda would go on and on comparing Muqabla to Rambo.
While Prem shakti was the first film Govinda had signed with Karisma which was back in 1991 their first release would be Muqabla. The fresh pairing as well as the strong content of Muqabla made it a hit. Also this was the first time Govinda had 2 hit films running consecutively in the 1990s, both Aankhen and Muqabla.
The film is a Hindi Remake of Telugu film Police Brothers (1994).
