TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

Although they first met years earlier, actor Ed Harris and actress Amy Madigan got married after working together on this film.

Danny Glover's first film lead role.

Sally Field's character's first name, "Edna," is only said once in the entire film. During the majority of the film, she is referred to as "Mrs. Spalding." Other than that, she is referred to as "sis" or "ma'am."

Gennie James was cast as Possum Spalding after the initially-cast little girl couldn't stop crying when the cameras were rolling. The two girls were actually friends in their hometown of Navasota, Texas.

Director and screenwriter Robert Benton set the film in his birthplace of Waxahachie, Texas in 1935, three years after he was born there. Waxahachie was a half-hour drive south of Dallas; a small, relatively-prosperous farming town near a major city.

Popular Dialogues

"[first lines] Edna Spalding: [seeing her daughter's doll at the dinner table] Possum, put that up now. Royce Spalding: Our Heavenly Father, bless this meal and all those who are about to receive it. Make us thankful for Your generous bounty, and Your unceasing love. Please remind us, in these hard times, to be grateful for what we have been given, and not to ask for what we can not have. And make us mindful of those less fortunate among us, as we sit at this table with all of Thy bounty. Amen."

"[last lines] Preacher: On the night before His crucifixion, Our Lord gathered with His disciples. He broke the bread, and blessed it, saying: "Take, eat; this is my body." And he took the cup and said: "Drink; this is my blood, which I shed for thee." [the congregants pass the elements of communion between them] Royce Spalding: Peace of God. Wylie: Peace of God."
