The first film ever permitted to shoot inside Honolulu's Iolani Palace.
Ka'iulani's given first name, Victoria, was a tribute to the Queen of Great Britain. In July 1843, Queen Victoria had helped to restore Hawaii's sovereignty and independence during the reign of King Kamehameha III. The queen's given names were Alexandrina Victoria, but she chose not to use her given first name. Similarly, Princess Ka'iulani chose not to use her given first name.
Ka'iulani means "highest point of heaven" in the Hawaiian language.
Princess Ka'iulani's full name at birth was "Victoria Ka'iulani Kalaninuiahilapalapa Kawekiu i Lunalilo Cleghorn," first born child of a Hawaiian Royal mother and a Scottish commoner father. She was born October 16, 1875 in the city of Honolulu, island of Oahu, Kingdom of Hawaii.
Actress Leo Anderson Akana, who plays Queen Liliuokalani in this film, has previously played both Liliuokalani and Princess Ka'iulani on stage. This was Akana'a first major film role, despite a long career as a professional theatre actor.
