When watching old home videos in season one, episode thirteen, "A Germ of a Story", Burt (Garret Dillahunt) remarks a younger Maw Maw resembles "the horny neighbor on the Mary Tyler Moore show", a character played by Cloris Leachman (Maw Maw).
The show is based in the same fictional universe as Gregory Thomas Garcia's other show, My Name Is Earl (2005). There are several references to his other show as well.
In every episode, at least one word (typically a long word) is mispronounced.
When Jimmy gets Hope from the prison after her mother is executed, baby Hope's prison number is 46664, the same as Nelson Mandela's.
According to Gregory Thomas Garcia, the title "Raising Hope" is an homage to Raising Arizona (1987), which partially inspired the show's concept.
