IMDbRebelde, a Netflix-exclusive next-generation reimagining of the Mexican adolescent drama, is returning for a second season six months after its debut. The second season, which premieres on July 27, 2022, has a fresh cast and more sinister storylines. Rebelde Season 2 began with a montage showing the cast of the boarding school dealing with the fallout from the Battle of the Bands contest in the Season 1 finale. Rebelde gave a spectacular performance, but in the end, MJ and Sebas prevailed. The second season of Rebelde's storyline dealt with a variety of adult subjects, including drugs, the unpleasant side of the music business, interpersonal problems, accidents and suicides, money and glamour, etc. The musical performances served to punctuate the story with just the right amount of tension, keeping spectators interested. The first surprise of the season was Mr. Bauman's declaration that the Battle of the Bands for this year was postponed and that a new type of competition will be held among the prodigy musicians. He started off by setting the pupils against one another, shattering the relationships they had developed during the previous season.
Netflix's official release was signed by character Celina Ferrer, described as the principal of Elite Way School. This indicated that the series is an in-universe sequel to Rebelde (2004), wherein Estefania Villarreal portrayed Celina.
Emilia's (Giovanna Grigio) hairstyle pays homage to Mexican pop singer and actress Thalia, who sported a similar look in the 90s.
Numerous cast members of the original Argentine series Rebelde Way (2002) (including its four protagonists) were former Chiquititas (1995) young actors. The Brazilian version Rebel Rio! (2011) had Carla Diaz from Chiquititas Brasil (1997). This new version has Giovanna Grigio, who starred in Chiquititas (2013).
Non of the original Mexican main cast from Televisa wanted to be part of the series.
