Republic of Doyle is a Canadian comedy-drama television series set in St. John's, Newfoundland which debuted 6 January 2010 on CBC Television. The show stars Seán McGinley and Allan Hawco as Malachy and Jake Doyle, a father and son who partner as private investigators in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Their cases involve them in all sorts of dealings – not all of them on the right side of the law.

It wasn't until the fifth season that Allan Hawco, the show's star and among its producers, helped foster a deal with Trifecta Entertainment of Los Angeles to put the show into United States syndication. According to Hawco, owners preferred to keep the show exclusive to Canadian audiences for the first several years to help keep the show "real and truthful to the place"; it's set in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Syndication will keep the show, which ended after season 6, playing in U.S. households for years.
Allan Hawco is friends with actor Russell Crowe who has guest starred on "Republic of Doyle." Among various connections, Russell has played music with Alan Doyle lead singer for the Canadian folk rock band Great Big Sea (the performers of the show's theme song). Both Alan Doyle and Allan Hawco are from St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Cross over between actors on "Murdoch Mysteries" and "Republic of Doyle" include Georgina Really (married to Mark O'Brien - who plays Des), Krystin Pellerin, Michelle Nolden, Johnny Harris, Jonathan Goad, and - of course - Yannick Bisson and Allan Hawco.
Jake is often either punched in the face or hit in the head and knocked out. Occasionally, a character will have a dispute with someone else also present and instead of hitting them, they will hit Jake.
Sean McGinley plays the character, Malachy Doyle, in the Canadian drama series "Republic of Doyle" (77 episodes, 2010-2014) as well as the Canadian skit-comedy series "This Hour Has 22 Minutes" (1 episode, 2013). Sean McGinley also plays the character, Doyle, in the movie Fools of Fortune (1990).
