Director Anand Gandhi uploaded the original film and 6-hour long extra feature online in November, 2013 asking individuals or entities to edit and carve the film as a whole to bring different interpretations. He would later conduct a festival in Mumbai for the entries.
To portray the ailing physical condition of Maitreya, Neeraj Kabi lost close to 17 kilos over four months, through a rigorous diet and exercise routine. Through this period, Kabi's fragile state deterred him from taking on any additional acting or theatre work.
The title of the film, 'Ship of Theseus' alludes to the highly debated Theseus' paradox (also referred to as the Ship of Theseus). The paradox engages in the idea of identity: "If parts of an object are replaced with similar parts, does it remain the same?" Thus this concept is applied to human beings psychologically, ideologically and physically throughout the film.
Director Anand Gandhi conceived the story while he was nursing his ailing grandparents at the hospital.
Egyptian filmmaker Aydah El-Kashef was originally meant to just assist Anand Gandhi with casting, but after seeing her read lines during an audition Gandhi cast her as Aaliya.
"Navin: If a ship is replaced part by part up to a point where not a single original part remains in it, is it still the same ship?"
"Charwaka: I got you a gift. Alphabets. It's amazing how we imagine that just these few alphabets will someday arrange themselves in a way that everything will suddenly make perfect sense. A permutation of known words suddenly bringing forward a previously unknown meaning."
