Dharmendra produced this movie as a launch pad for his nephew Abhay Deol. Dharmendra earlier had successfully launched both his sons Sunny Deol in Betaab and Bobby Deol in Barsaat. Both these movies were commercial hits but he couldn't repeat the same success with Abhay. Though the movie didn't do good at the box office, it has since gained a cult following.
Ayesha Takia signed the film at the age of 16
Abhay Deol stated , "I went through some auditions where Imtiaz Ali (director of Socha Na Tha) selected me. At that time, he was in touch with another producer. That producer backed out. When I told Sunny, he wanted to meet the director and hear the script. Sunny liked it. And Vijeta Films took it up from there." After Socha Na Tha, Imtiaz was to make Jab We Met with Bobby Deol and Bhumika Chawla and Highway with Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta.
The film was originally titled " Kabhi Socha Na Tha".
The film did not have a theatrical release in British Columbia,Canada.
